Tithe Records

Tithes were taxes paid to the local Church for the upkeep of the building , wages of the clergy and the loc al ministry.

Originally these often took the form of goods as a percentage of income but quickly this was replaced with money.

Tithes began in about 1200 and were eventually phased out in 1977.

Records will show names, addresses and an indication of the persons wealth.

Tithe maps of land ownership also exist.

Tithe Records are held in the National Archives.

Copies are often held in the Country Records Offices.

Many records have been copies by Family History Societies and published in book or CD Rom form.
