Passport

Passports were first used in the UK in the mid 1800's although they were not generally used until after World War One.

Initially passports were all signed personally by a Government Minister and the Consul of the Country for which the passport was to be used.

The National Archives maintain records of passport applications from 1851 to 1915 but these were mainly made by Diplomats or other people who wished to use them formally in the country of their visit.

Details of passports issued after 1916 have not yet been released.
