The History
Parish Rate Books were used to list the local taxation payments by local people.
Parishes were able to levy a small tax on individuals to pay for the upkeep of the poor house and the maintainance of highways, lighting etc in much the same way as Parish Councils operate nowadays.
The first rate books appeared at the end of the 1600's and they continued to be used through Queen Victoria's reign.
Their survival rate is varied with some areas have a complete set and others only a few remain.
details vary according to the book although from the mid 1800's printed books and forms were available so data is then more standardised.
The least you should expect is firstname, surname, address and amount paid.
What records can you find?
The records were locally based so if they survive it will be with the County Records Office or a local museum
