1939 National Registration Records |
|
The 1939 National Registration is a record of the civilian population as at 29 September 1939. This was undertaken to allow for the issue of identity cards to every person in the United Kingdom. Records were made of the full name, age, sex, marital status, occupation , membership of armed service reserve forces, and address . The books are arranged in National Registration Number order and like the census were based on the actual whereabouts of individuals on the night concerned. Thus, if an individual was not at his/her usual place of residence, e.g., in hospital or at a hotel, he/she will not appear at that address in the books but will appear wherever they spent the night. Members of the Armed Services do not appear on the records. Information about people who are deceased Due to the 100 years rule only records relating to individuals who are now recorded as deceased. Where an individual is not recorded as being deceased, the information will not be disclosed unless the applicant can produce clear evidence which establishes that a death has taken place. There is a charge which at present is £42 for this service. Information about people who are still alive The only way to access information about people still alive is for that person to make an application under the Freedom of Information Act to see the information that is recorded about them. This application would be free of charge . How to apply Contact The NHS Information Centre Or E-mail The NHS Information Centre
