Lay Subsidies

Lay subsidies were taxes on the laity ie landowners other than the Clergy who paid clerical subsidies.

Lay subsidies took place at intervals for 150 years from about 1300 AD.

The taxes were based upon an estimate as to the landowners value and wealth.

Some searchable  lay subsidy records are held by British History Online.

Copies are often held in the Country Records Offices.
