IGI - International Genealogical Index

The History

The IGI is the biggest and best genealogical index available online.

The Church of the Latter Day Saints ( LDS) originated the IGI to help church members trace their ancestors.  Part of the LDS religious belief is need to trace and pray for ancestors.

The LDS church made their index available to non members and encouraged contributions to help the index grow.

What records can you find?

From a few million names at the start the index continues to rise in size with about 30 million entries of which over 70 million are from the UK..

The index contains Birth, Marriage and Death details from all over the world usually taken from official and church records..

Searching is free and users are welcome to use the data as they wish as long as it is for personal use.

One small word of caution is that like all data there are a few errors especially amongst the entries made by individuals and as such  any new information should be verified.
