Chartist Records |
|
History The Chartist movement operated from 1838 and died out in about 1848. Although it began life amongst skilled workers in London it quickly moved to the North of England where there was great popular support for its aims of Parliamentary reform. Mass marches, meetings, petitions and even a general strike were organised with Parliament coming under real pressure. The official response was harsh including the use of troops and judicial sentences of lengthy terms of imprisonment or transportation. Where would you find names of Chartists? Court records of this time would show sentences and names of those involved as would old newspaper reports. Online, Chartist ancestors has a great deal of information and lists people involved in various incidents including those transported to Australia.
