Photo/Lookup Service

Lookup Service
The Lookup Service covers local enquiries to check out information ie does a house still stand , is there a readable headstone etc.
Lookup enquiries are costed as per the photo service below.
Checks on Parish Registers at Essex Records Office can be made although they would be substantially more expensive as they involve a 50 mile round trip.
Another option for checks is via researchers who operate at the Records Office although these vary in price and can be quite expensive.
For details contact the Records Office directly and always obtain a costing before a commission..
Photo Service
One of the most common
enquiries is from people who want photographs
taken of gravestones, churches, houses, memorials that were
connected in some way with their ancestors life or work.
Essex Family History is
now able to offer to provide this service within the Dengie 100 area of Eastern Essex although there will be a small charge to cover costs.
How it
works
You will be asked to provide specific
details of the location and the object which you would like
photographed .We will then go to the location and take the required
photographs
The
photograph will be available via JPEG digital file or conventional
photo print for supply via E mail, CD , post depending on the format and your
preferences.
We cannot of course guarantee that
the place or feature that interests you is still standing. If there is
any doubt and before any charges accrue we will take reasonable steps to
verify existence.
The service is based in
Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex , England although coverage can be arranged in many
other parts of Essex.
Churches
Although the exterior of churches
and churchyards are freely accessible the interior of most churches are only
open by arrangement. If the church is normally closed, photographs of the
interior of churches may incur additional costs to the church authorities and
the provider.
Private Houses or
other property
Most
houses can be photographed although the image available may be limited by
hedges, trees etc.
Normally the approval of the current resident is sought in which case approval to share the details of the reason for the photograph with the resident is required
UK law allows for photographs to be
taken from public property (usually a public road) without the approval of the owner although this procedure will only be undertaken in specific circumstances.
Gravestone/Headstone
Please note
that many gravestone deteriorate with time and sometimes can be difficult to
read. Although superficial coverings can be removed most gravestone require
expert cleaning to avoid long term damage. Examples of an old headstone that
has deteriorate is included above although the digital camera is able to
extract the important details on the headstone allowing the full
name and date of death to be clearly visible on a full digital
print.
Many
churches have removed headstones that have marked deterioration or are leaning
at dangerous angles .Although
there are many headstones for graves in this area in every church there are
many unmarked graves. Please do not assume that tracing an ancestor's burial
to a specific church will always result in a headstone to be
found.
Most church wardens maintain records of burial plots and will conduct searches although quite reasonably this service may cost a donation towards the church.
Maldon District Council owned cemeteries charge £15 per search.
How much
will it cost?
The basic service which includes a mileage costs and relevant digital photographs will
cost £15 .
Photogaphs on CD or printed on 6 x 4 paper are also available at extra cost.
Photographs in the remainder of the country of Essex can be undertaken but this will involve additional costs to cover mileage.
