The oftener carpets are shaken the longer they will wear as the dirt that collects under them grinds out the threads
Beat a carpet on the wrong side first and then more gently on the right side
Do not beat carpets with a stick with sharp points as it may tear the carpet
A half worn carpet may be made to last longer by ripping it apart and transposing the breadths
A stair carpet should never be swept with a long broom but with a short handled brush and dust pan held closely under each step
If a corner of a carpet becomes loose and prevents the door opening or trips every one up; nail it down at once
To wash a carpet take a pail of cold water and three gills of ox-gall. Rub it into the carpet with a soft brush. It will raise a lather which must be washed off with clear cold water. Then rub dry with a clean cloth.
When nailing down a carpet be sure that the floor has been washed and allowed to dry or the nails will rust and damage the carpet
